It’s common knowledge that brushing your teeth is vital to keep your mouth healthy but are you doing it correctly? Simply brushing your teeth regularly may not be enough to guarantee you’re keeping your mouth clean.

Brush Properly

Be sure your toothbrush is at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use short back and forth strokes on the entire surface of your teeth. It’s easy to forget the backs of your teeth where plaque often builds up so remember to turn your tooth brush vertically to scrub those harder to reach places.

Proper brush technique also includes how much you brush, not just the number of times but the duration of your brushing. The ADA recommends brushing for at least two minutes, twice daily. To ensure you’re brushing for the adequate amount of time, try setting a timer on your phone or listening to a song that is about two minutes long.

Take a Close Look at the Brush Itself

The head and bristles on your toothbrush should be small enough to reach into the crevices of your mouth and teeth. The International Dental Health Association says that most adults require a small or medium brush.

Keeping your toothbrush clean doesn’t require any extra pieces or effort. Simply rinse it well after each use and allow it to air dry. While covering your toothbrush may seem like a great way to shield it from germs it often creates a moist breeding ground for bacteria.

Your toothbrush shouldn’t be a permanent object, it’s important to replace it every 3-4 months to ensure the bristles are in tip top shape.

Don’t Rely on Brushing Alone

Along with your regular toothbrushing routine you should also be flossing your teeth daily. Food and bacteria get stuck down in hard to reach places between your teeth that even the best toothbrush can’t reach. Floss should rub against teeth in a motion that creates a C shape, wrapping the floss around each tooth.

Even after brushing and flossing bacteria can still linger in your mouth. Using mouthwash and a tongue scraper is sure to rid your mouth of any leftover germs and debris.
