safe cars

Sometimes accidents are unavoidable, which is why it’s important to drive a safe vehicle. Not only should you follow the speed limit and wear your seat belt, but you should also do your best to purchase a vehicle that is highly rated for its safety.

To qualify for 2019 IHS Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as an acceptable or good rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test. It also must earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.

To qualify for 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It also must earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and a good headlight rating.

Vehicles that were awarded Top Safety Pick+ are bold in our list.

Vehicles on this list are the best vehicle choices for safety within size categories. Size and weight of the vehicle may influence occupant protection in serious crashes.

Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more protection than smaller, lighter ones. Therefore, a small car that’s a Top Safety Pick doesn’t necessarily offer more protection than a bigger car that doesn’t earn the award.

Driving a Top Safety Pick may protect you from injuries but if you have been injured in a car accident due to someone else’s negligence you may need to consult an experienced personal injury attorney.
